Introduction
The abstracts contain not only births, marriages, and deaths, but also information from "gossip" columns that would be helpful in searching for ancestors. This includes "visits" that include a relationship or different surname that includes the relationship. Some listings are abstracts, others in which the articles were very short include the full text. Obvious spelling errors are not corrected but followed by "[sic]". Generally, other spelling, abbreviation, capitalization, and punctuation, especially the use of, or lack of, commas, is left as in the original article. The date at the end of the listing is the date of the issue of the newspaper. The volume and number are shown at the first listing for the date. When the same information was reported in several issues, the information was only included once. When additional important information was included in a later issue, for example, out of town relatives at a funeral, the information is shown in "[]" with the issue date. The ¶ symbol in an abstract indicates the information following was in a separate article in the same issue. A Western Springs column was started in 1897 and apparently ended with the September 3, 1898, column. The newspapers are available on microfilm at Hinsdale Public Library but will not be loaned on interlibrary from there.

The Waterloo Dailey Courier gives an account "… at the home of Rev. and Mrs. J. R. Allen, No. 1125 Washington street. … marriage of their daughter, Miss Floy Edna Allen and Mr. Alexander Y. Tully. … friends of the bride – Misses Elsie Roth and Lena Shutts and Mrs. C. F. Foote [decorated the home.] The friends were received by Mrs. C. H. Abbs. … music played by Miss Bessie Allen. … attendants were Miss Lizzie Conger and Mr. Ray Allen. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Allen, father of the bride. … [servers at the reception] were Misses Ethel McCoy, Jennie Klingaman, Clara McCoy, Bessie Allen, and Miss Titus. Mrs. Tully has been a Waterloo girl for six years … [graduated from] the west side high school in ’94. They will reside in Hinsdale. Mr. Tully’s parents reside in Aberdeen, Scotland." October 8, 1898
The wedding of Miss Margaret Lalor and Mr. George P. Cary was solemnized at the Congregational church, Wednesday evening. Rev. M. N. Preston performed the ceremony. Mr. William Lalor, elder brother of the bride, gave the bride away. Mr. Paul Cary attended the groom. The maid of honor was Miss Francis Stuart and bridesmaids were Miss Mabel Sanborn of Chicago and Miss Grace Magedeburg of Milwaukee. Margaret Knisley and Gladys Cable [were] flower girls. Messrs. Louis Comstock, Charles Stuart, Dr. Elliott Carpenter and Ralph Bradley acted as ushers. They will make their home in Chicago. Volume IV, Number 3, Saturday, October 15, 1898
Tuesday evening, George James Barker of this suburb was married to Georgie [sic] Foster Smith of Kansas City. The ceremony occurred at the home of the bride’s parents, 1423 Independence avenue, Kansas City. The maid of honor was Miss Maud Matur, the best man, S. Fred Smith, bridesmaids, Misses May French and Mina Adams. Among the guests were Mrs. J. W. Barker and Mr. and Mrs. Walter M. Pond of Chicago, also the groom’s mother, Mrs. P. Barker of this village. McIlheney murdered Frederick Schroeder in LaGrange on Jan. 29, 1897, … [while they worked] on the Hammond railroad. … He was indicted … by the Cook County grand jury. Mrs. Caroline Ripley, the aged mother of J. A. Ripley of this suburb, died at her home in Princeton, Ill., last week Thursday. Last winter she made her home here. The funeral was held last Saturday. December 24, 1898

Bessie Woods, a five year old colored child, died Wednesday at the home of her parents on First street of pneumonia. The remains were laid away in Oak Forest cemetery yesterday. December 24, 1898
The coroner was called here Wednesday to hold an inquest over the body of Carl Haker, an aged German, who died five miles south of this place … of heart disease. Mr. Haker was one of DuPage county’s early settlers. The funeral services were held from the German Lutheran church. December 24, 1898

The father of the bride gave [her] away. The bridesmaids were Misses Bessie and Daisy Burton, Miss Mary Irish, and Miss Hannibel Murray. The maid of honor was Miss Lucy Burton. Mr. Jack Burton served as master of ceremonies, with Edward Fairchilds as best man. The ushers were O. Burton, C. Stuart, H. Colburn and Robt. McIntyre. Among out of town guests were Mrs. Sylvester Morris of New York, sister of Mrs. Thayer, Mr. and Mrs. B. Burton and daughter of Geneva, Mr. and Mrs. John Scales of Buena Park, Henry Gate and wife of Willimette, and Mrs. George McCurdy, Rev. and Mrs. Clark, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Hopkins and Miss Taylor of Chicago. They will reside in Hinsdale. December 31, 1898
Rob. V. Robertson died at Placerville, Cal., Wednesday morning. He was formerly of Chicago and went to California four years ago. … His wife, Mrs. Belle E. Robertson, niece of C. B. Kimbell, is the only survivor. December 31, 1898
William Wright, alias John Porterfield, alias John Carr of Downers Grove, gave himself up to Aurora police Wednesday, confessing to being a bigamist. According to his story, Wright has four living wives. Thirteen years ago he married Mrs. Sarah Jones of Danville. He deserted her to marry Ella Wilder, of Pontiac and later married Lutia Laughlin, of Pickering, Mo. His latest wife was Lena Korman of Peoria, whom he deserted a few days ago in Downers Grove. Feb. 2. Sheriff Hoy captured Henry Taylor, one of the Middaugh horse thieves, in Little Rock, Ark.
Feb. 2. Mrs. Sarah Long set out for the gold fields of Alaska, where she lost everything and contracted disease.
Aug. 31. Douglas Huntington died.
Sept 16. Alice Doane died of consumption. [September 24th issue stated "died last Tuesday."]
